American researchers have undertaken a study which utilised the internet to increase levels of participation in physical activity.
In the study, 249 sedentary adults were recruited to partake in an experimental exercise program. The participants were divided into three groups; a supportive and motivational internet-based program; a print-based version of this internet-based program; or internet links to credible online exercise programs administered by medical and fitness professionals.
After 12 months, the participants in all groups had increased their levels of exercise by between 80 and 90 minutes a week. The three approaches displayed no significant differences in their ability to motivate participants. Whereas the web-based program gave e-mail feedback, the print-based version gave feedback via post, and all three programs offered assessment tools, motivational strategies and techniques for overcoming barriers to exercise.
Although the internet-based program was not revealed to be more effective, it was shown to be equally effective, cheaper, and more tree-friendly than printed resources.
